Our Story
“A Legacy in Every Bean”
Rooted in History, Grown with Care
We are an historic quality coffee producer located in Northern Tanzania. Established in 1899 by German settlers the farm was named after the natural springs found in the area. Burka’s ideal location at the base of Mt. Meru provides the area with the optimal climate and perfect soil for growing specialty Columbian Milds Arabica coffees.
Founded by German settlers during the colonial era of Tanganyika.
Arabica coffee cultivation begins on the estate.
Post-World War I: The Estate is Declared “Enemy Property” The estate comes under British Protectorate control following Germany’s defeat.
A group of Swiss investors purchases the estate and begins modern coffee farming operations.
Burka acquires neighboring Selian Estate, significantly increasing coffee production. As Arusha city expands, The farm has grown smaller in size since 1990.
Burka Coffee Estates manages 342 hectares of high-quality Arabica coffee, sustaining its legacy of excellence.

Sustainability
At Burka Coffee Estates, we grow coffee in harmony with nature, preserving the rich biodiversity of our land. Since our founding, we’ve protected a 118-hectare indigenous forest near the Burka springs—home to native birds, bushbuck, and other wildlife, creating a thriving ecosystem within the estate.
Community
At Burka Coffee Estates, we are committed to building a strong, inclusive community for our staff. At the heart of this is Selian Village—a purpose-built residential area maintained by the estate to support the well-being of our employees and their families.
The village offers essential amenities including irrigation, gardens, pension plots, a school, medical care, sports facilities, security, and places of worship. By fostering a supportive and diverse environment, we ensure our team thrives both at work and at home—reflecting our dedication to people as much as to coffee.

Meet the People Behind the Coffee
Our dedicated team brings passion, expertise, and care to every step of the coffee journey—from seed to cup. Together, we uphold the values of quality, sustainability, and community that define Burka Coffee Estates.
